Myths about Psychotherapy

Myths about Psychotherapy
Therapy is too expensive; I shouldn’t have to pay for someone to listen to me.

It is difficult to assign a dollar amount to the value of feeling peaceful, confident, happy, and effective in ones life, or to assign a price to becoming available for and maintaining a satisfying relationship. Similarly, it’s hard to know what to spend on realizing ones potential, salvaging a relationship or ending a relationship gracefully when it’s necessary.

A myth that keeps people stuck is that these things come freely and naturally when our society, media, parents, and others are operating without any formal education about how to form safe, productive, respectful, and enduring relationships, how to mature, how to go through life’s expected and unexpected changes, how to communicate, disagree, parent, and so many other aspects of life and the human condition.

In the most practical of terms, therapy may lead to improved employment potential and capacity as well as reduced or more efficient spending patterns. On another level, therapy is a unique and valuable opportunity to examine oneself and to grow in a safe and personally meaningful way.
